Long term impact of smoke from a six week coal mine fire on lung mechanics in exposed adults.Quantitative proteomic profiling of experimental chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, validated in human lung tissue, identifies protein alterations and defines potential novel clinically relevant disease drivers, therapeutic targets and biomarkers. |

Are e‐cigarette use and vaping associated with increased respiratory symptoms and poorer lung function in a population exposed to smoke from a coal mine fire?

Our study provides supporting evidence on the hazards of e-cigarette use and the need for controls on e-cigarette use. E-cigarette users were found to have higher prevalence of chest tightness and self-reported asthma than non-users. They were more likely to be younger, current tobacco smokers, have mental health problems and abnormal lung mechanics. |

Patients with advanced idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) have not been included in randomized trials of nintedanib or pirfenidone, but are often treated with these drugs. We show that in a real-world setting, patients with severe compared to mild–moderate IPF may not have lung function decline during treatment, but show substantially greater mortality. |

We developed and validated a simplified diagnostic technique with a home-worn device for use in the primary care setting to reliably diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea without the need for polysomnography. This model allows primary care physicians to identify patients at high suspicion of sleep apnoea. We show that generally recommended screening questionnaires provide little added benefit. |
