Underuse of beta-blockers by patients with COPD and co-morbid acute coronary syndrome: A nationwide follow-up study in New Zealand
Lianne Parkin, Joshua Quon, Katrina Sharples, David Barson, Jack Dummer
10.1111/resp.13662
In this nationwide study of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, only 56.6% of patients with an acute coronary syndrome hospitalization during follow-up received a beta-blocker in the subsequent 6 months. The proportions who received aspirin and a statin were much higher, suggesting a particular reluctance to prescribe beta-blockers.

This economic evaluation compared a new home-based pulmonary rehabilitation model with traditional centre-based practice, demonstrating favourable results using both cost-utility and cost-effectiveness approaches. Regardless of programme location, completion of pulmonary rehabilitation was associated with a significant reduction in healthcare costs in the following 12 months. |

This study confirms that a handheld flow meter (HFM) is significantly advantageous in detecting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), regardless of the use of a conventional questionnaire. |

We found modest evidence for an association between infant exposure to elevated particulate matter during a 6-week coal mine fire and reduced respiratory system reactance measured 3 years after the fire. The magnitude of the association was small, but of potential clinical importance in the most severely exposed children. |

Improved diagnostic yield for lung nodules with digital tomosynthesis-corrected navigational bronchoscopy: Initial experience with a novel adjunct

10.1111/resp.13609
Tomosynthesis-assisted navigational bronchoscopy using a conventional fluoroscopic C-arm is a new technique that can correct for nodule divergence but its impact on diagnostic yield is unproven. We performed a retrospective study evaluating this technology and found a 25% increase in diagnostic yield with small peripheral nodules.

214 | Assessing ventilatory control stability in children with and without an elevated central apnoea index

10.1111/resp.13606
While central apnoeas are common in children, a central apnoea index of >5 events/h is outside normal ranges and raises concern regarding origins of such events. Our study indicates that an elevated index of >5 is associated with a hypersensitive ventilatory control system and supports literature that neuroimaging may not be needed. |
