Prof. Mangunnegoro

Doctor Hadiarto Mangunnegoro was born in Cianjur, West Java, Indonesia on 18 July 1942. He finished his elementary school and junior high school in Cianjur. In 1960, he graduated from SMA Negeri 3 in Jakarta. He continued his education at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia from 1960 to 1966. He received a Medical Doctor certificate in December 1966. Subsequently, he attended pulmonary medicine residency from 1967 to 1971 at the Department of Pulmonology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia.

Doctor Hadiarto became a staff at the Department of Pulmonology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia. He served as Head of the Department from 1987-1998. He was Deputy Director of the Medical Services of Persahabatan Hospital, Indonesia, from 1987 to 1995.

In the field of organization, he, together with Professor Rasmin Rasjid, founded the Indonesian Society of Respirology (ISR) in 1973. He became Chairman of the ISR for two consecutive terms. He was also one of the founders of the Indonesian Asthma Foundation which was founded in 1986. At the regional level, Doctor Hadiarto, together with Professor Shiro Kira from Japan, Professor Ann J. Woolcock from Australia, and Professor Tan Wan Ceng from Singapore, founded the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) in 1985. He became the President of the 14th Asia-Pacific Congress on Disease of the Chest (APCDC) in 1996 and became the Regent of the Indonesian Chapter of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) in 1987.

His other positions were as trustee of the University of Indonesia and the Hospital Supervisory Board of the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta. He was also the member of presidential doctor team for President Soeharto, President Abdurrahman Wahid, President Megawati Sukarnoputri and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Doctor Hadiarto became a Professor in 2000.

He received additional education abroad, including at the Research Institute of Tuberculosis in Kiyose, Tokyo for three months to study bronchoscopy in 1970, then received training on obstructive pulmonary disease and pulmonary function at Kyoto University, Japan for six months in 1978 and a short course in pulmonology at the University of Colorado in 1985. He mastered in obstructive pulmonary disease, namely asthma and COPD, and was also a member of GINA.

Professor Hadiarto was very active in developing pulmonology and was also a visionary person. He was very great in his services in developing new education in Indonesia so that respiratory physicians contribute in developing health services in Indonesia. He was very active in motivating young pulmonologists to develop themselves into reliable pulmonary doctors. His students really appreciate him for his extensive knowledge, leadership, guidance and support for the development of pulmonology in Indonesia. Professor Hadiarto fell ill in early December 2020 due to being infected with SARS-COV2 virus. He passed away on 31 December 2020. He had a wife and three children, one girl and two boys. Indonesia has lost its best physician and educator in the field of pulmonology. The Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia has lost a very capable and highly dedicated teaching staff. Indonesia's new doctors have lost a role model and a reliable doctor. Goodbye Professor Hadiarto. May Allah the All-Compassionate give you the best place in His side,
