APSR / KYF Young Investigator Award for Geriatric Respirology

Prof. Fukuchi

KYF is an acronym from the transliteration of 敬和以慧富 and Prof. Yoshinosuke Fukuchi, the joint financial sponsor of this Award.

Yoshinosuke Fukuchi M.D. Ph.D. is a professor emeritus at Juntendo University, Tokyo.

Inaugurated for the 2018 Congress, the Award will be available at each annual APSR Congress until 2025.

The Award is to promote investigations in aging lung in health and disease (basic science, translational clinical medicine, epidemiology, socio-economic study). Graying of society casts a universal burden on keeping society healthy and the lung is known as most vulnerable organ in old people. The scientific approach to tackle this serious issue is emerging but not enough yet.

One Award is available each year for eight years, to the first author of the best paper accepted for presentation at the year's APSR Congress. The paper must be of original work on geriatric respirology in any of the following fields:

  • Clinical respiratory medicine
  • Cell & molecular biology
  • Clinical allergy & immunology
  • Environmental & occupational health and epidemiology

The paper is selected by the APSR, supported by the APSR assemblies, who rank papers for their novelty, importance, methodology, clarity and overall quality. A consensus on the best paper on geriatric respirology in any of the above fields, is then obtained through a rigorous judging system.

The Award:
  • $500 (jointly funded by Prof. Fukuchi and the APSR)
  • Invitation to the Gala Dinner (or similar social event) at the Congress
  • Commemorative certificate which will be presented during the Gala Dinner (or similar social event) at the Congress.
  • The awardee may also be introduced on the APSR website, Bulletin and social media.
The Awardee:
  • Must be an APSR member (en bloc or individual)
  • Must be aged ≤40 at the start of the Congress
  • Preferably normally resident in the Asia-Pacific, in a country or region that is an LMIC*
  • Must be the First Author and able to present the paper in person at the Congress.
  • Cannot be a winner of any other award for the same paper nor have other travel support
  • Must submit their abstract before the submission deadline: (See congress website)
  • Must register for the Congress before their individual "cut-off date".
The cut-off date will be provided by the Secretariat after their abstract has been accepted. This date will be earlier than the usual registration deadline, to enable the programme schedule to be compiled and awards to be considered.
  • The Awardee is required to send a report (circa 500 words) of their experience at the Congress to the APSR Secretariat within one month after the Congress. The report may be published in the APSR Bulletin and/or Newsletter.
