Call for nominations

The Term of Office for the APSR President-Elect is one year.

Nomination Guideline

  1. Timeframes

    • 10 July – 9 August 2020: Call for Nominations and Applications
    • 10 August – 9 September 2020: Selection
    • September 2020 - Announcement of the new President-Elect
  2. Qualifications and eligibility for President-Elect

    1. APSR Ordinary member only. Honorary members, Associate members and Undergraduate student members cannot apply to be President-Elect.
    2. To comply with Charter and Bylaws Article 5.3.d: "The President, Immediate Past President and President-Elect shall come from different countries or regions", candidates for the election in 2020 must not be from Japan.
    3. Demonstrate effective contribution to activities of the APSR; such as but not limited to past or current experience as APSR leadership; e.g. Steering Committee membership, Chair or member of APSR Committees/Taskforce, Assembly Troika Leadership, Respirology Editor in Chief, Central or Local Congress Chair, Councillor, etc.
    4. Demonstrate ability to develop new initiatives that improve the ability of the APSR to achieve its Mission and Vision
    5. Business skills such as networking, preparing and running meetings and effective communication
    6. Understanding optimal use of digital technologies for a Society
    7. Capacity and ability to support the daily work of the APSR leadership and Secretariat.
    8. Commitment and availability for these positions includes participation at the APSR Annual Congress, Executive Committee informal meetings which are held at ATS and ERS congresses or equivalent virtual meetings
    9. English language proficiency
    10. Residence in the Asia-Pacific region to facilitate timely direct access for the Secretariat and to comply with Charter and Bylaws Article 5.2
    11. No conflict of interest and able to abide by the APSR Charter and Bylaws
  3. Roles of President-Elect

    1. Member of
      • Steering Committee
      • Strategic Planning Committee
      • Finance Committee
      • Central Congress Committee
      • Executive Committee (EXCO)
    2. Attendance at annual congresses of APSR, JRS, ATS and ERS based on the MoUs
    3. Attendance at congresses of other national societies if needed
  4. EXCO Selection Committee

    1. If there are more than two applications, the EXCO Selection Committee votes to select the best two as candidates for the role.
    2. Members of EXCO Selection Committee shall consist of;
      • Chair of Nomination Committee
      • Chair of Steering Committee
      • Chair of Strategic Planning Committee
      • Chair of Research Committee
      • Chair of Education Committee
      • Chair of Finance Committee
      • Chair of Membership Committee
      • Chair of Central Congress Committee
      • The last two Past Presidents
      • APSR Councillors
    3. If any of the above is an applicant, they are excluded from the EXCO Selection Committee.
  5. Eligible voters for Final Decision

    1. The Eligible voters for Final Decision vote which of the two candidates will be President-Elect.
    2. Eligible voters of the Final Decision shall consist of;
      • Executive Committee members
      • EXCO Selection Committee members
      • Assembly Troika Leaders
    3. If any of the above is a candidate, they are excluded from the Eligible voters.
  6. Nomination guideline

    1. Any APSR Ordinary member can nominate another APSR Ordinary member or themselves.
    2. Unsuccessful applicants are eligible to subsequently nominate themselves to other available positions.
    3. The APSR Secretariat sends out a Call for Nominations to all APSR members
    4. Applicants submit the application form and their current curriculum vitae.
    5. Applications are first checked according to the eligibility conditions by the Nomination Committee.
    6. The APSR Secretariat informs the applicants whether or not they are eligible.
    7. Applicants who fulfil the eligibility conditions must provide a proposal statement and a photo for the ballot sheets.
    8. If there are more than two applications, the EXCO Selection Committee votes to select the best two.
    9. If only one suitable person with the appropriate qualifications applies, then that person will assume the role upon the Executive Committee approval.
  7. Election guideline

    1. If there are two suitable candidates, elections take place using online anonymous ballot.
    2. The EXCO Selection Committee holds the voting rights.
    3. Each voter can vote for only one candidate.
    4. Quorum; Number of votes must be in excess of 50% of the total number of voting members. If this is not achieved, a second or further rounds may be needed.
    5. In the event of a tie, the Eligible voters for Final Decision will revote for the tied position.
    6. As soon as the election results have been endorsed by the Executive Committee, the APSR Secretariat will notify all candidates of the result by email.
    7. New President-Elect is officially announced on the APSR website, along with the result of the vote.

      1. Name
      2. Email address
      3. APSR membership number
      4. FAPSR joined year and FAPSR number (where applicable)
      5. Experience as APSR Officer (Title or position)
      6. Personal statement summarizing your background and reasons to be considered for the position
      7. Reasons for wishing to serve the APSR in the position
      8. Your achievements in the past five years (Required only for current committee Chairs or similar leadership positions)
      9. Description of your APSR-related activities in the last ten years
      10. Declaration of conflict of Interest
      11. Names and emails of two referees
