Open positions

  • Chairperson of Education Committee
  • Chairperson of Membership Committee
  • Chairperson of Research Committee

(See Article 5.5.1 of the APSR Charter and Bylaws for a brief overview of the committees.)

Term of office

  • The term of office for Permanent Committees Chairpersons is two years from 1 December 2020 until the APSR 2022 Seoul Congress closes.

Roles

  • Take responsibility for Committee activities in accordance with Executive Committee advice
  • Provide an annual activity report, and other reports as required, to the Executive Committee
  • Be an active member of the Executive Committee
  • Attend the annual APSR Congress

Timeframe

  • 7 September - 10 October 2020: Call for Nominations and Applications
  • 11 - 31 October 2020: Selection
  • November 2020 - Announcement of the new Chairpersons

Qualifications and eligibility

Any Ordinary APSR member can apply.

Applicants are required to:

  • Demonstrate effective contribution to activities of the APSR, such as but not limited to past or current experience in APSR leadership; for example, chairperson or member of an APSR committee/taskforce, Assembly leader, Respirology Editor in Chief, Local Congress Committee Chairperson, Councillor, etc.
  • Demonstrate competence to develop new initiatives that improve the ability of the APSR to achieve its aims.
  • Have business skills such as networking, preparing and running meetings, effective communication, etc.
  • Understand optimal use of digital technologies for a Society.
  • Have capacity and ability to support the daily work of the APSR leadership and Secretariat.
  • Have competent English language skills.
  • Be committed and available for the demands of the position, including participation at the APSR annual Congress, Executive Committee informal meetings at ATS and ERS conferences or equivalent virtual meetings.
  • Reside in the Asia-Pacific region to facilitate real-time communication with the Secretariat.
  • Have no conflict of interest and able to abide by the APSR Charter and Bylaws.

Nomination and Application process

  1. The APSR Secretariat sends out a Call for Nominations to APSR members.
  2. Any Ordinary APSR member can nominate another Ordinary APSR member or themselves using the nomination form.
  3. Applicants submit their application form and their current curriculum vitae.

    The application form includes

    • Name
    • Email address
    • APSR membership number (or en bloc society membership number)
    • Year of becoming FAPSR (where applicable)
    • Personal statement summarizing your background and reasons to be considered for the position
    • Reasons for wishing to serve the APSR in the position
    • APSR leadership experience
    • Achievements in the past five years as an APSR leader (where applicable)
    • APSR-related activities in the last ten years
    • Declaration of conflict of Interest
    • Names and email addresses of two referees
  4. Applications are checked for eligibility by the Nomination Committee.
  5. The APSR Secretariat informs the applicants whether or not they are eligible.
  6. Applicants who fulfil the eligibility conditions are then invited to provide a proposal statement and photo, which will be pasted to ballot sheets and entered for a vote.

Candidate selection process

  1. If only one suitable person with the appropriate qualifications applies, then that candidate will assume the role upon the Executive Committee approval.
  2. When there are more than two applications, an 'EXCO Selection Committee' will vote to select the best two as candidates for the role. Membership of EXCO Selection Committee comprises;
    • Chairperson of Nomination Committee
    • Chairperson of Steering Committee
    • Chairperson of Strategic Planning Committee
    • Chairperson of Research Committee
    • Chairperson of Education Committee
    • Chairperson of Finance Committee
    • Chairperson of Membership Committee
    • Chairperson of Central Congress Committee
    • The last two Past Presidents
    • APSR Councillors
  3. If any of the above is an applicant, they are excluded from the EXCO Selection Committee.

  4. When the best two are selected, or if there are only two applications, a vote for the most suitable candidate will be held by 'Eligible Voters for Final Decision', comprising:
    • EXCO Selection Committee members
    • Executive Committee members
    • Assembly leaders
    • Members of the Committee of the open position
  5. If any of the above is an applicant, they may not vote.

  6. For steps 2 and 3 above, each voter can vote for only one candidate. Votes are cast secretly, online.
  7. Quorum; Number of votes must be in excess of 50% of the total number of voting members. If this is not achieved, a second or further rounds may be needed.
  8. In the event of a tie, the Eligible Voters for Final Decision will revote for the tied position.
  9. As soon as the election results have been endorsed by the Executive Committee, the APSR Secretariat will notify all candidates of the result by email.
  10. The new Chairperson is officially announced on the APSR website, along with the result of the vote.
