PCCP Statement on Manila Hostage Incident

Dear Colleague,

We hope that this letter finds you well.

The Philippine College of Chest Physicians, the host of the APSR 2010, has been in the full swing of preparations for our convention when the unfortunate incident at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila happened. As a nation, we are shocked and dismayed by this tragic turn of events that runs completely contrary to the hospitality that the Philippines is known for. Let us assure you though that this event is isolated and in no way reflects the state of affairs of the city and the country nor the behaviour of its people.

We extend our deepest and sincerest sympathies to the families and countrymen of these victims, most especially to the people of the Hongkong Special Administrative Region. We join you in this time of mourning.

In this regard, as we stand in solidarity with you during these trying times, we ask you to join us for the APSR 2010 as the Philippines has joined all the previous meetings. Even in the difficult times that the previous host countries experienced, the Philippine delegation attended these events knowing full well that the organizers would make security concerns paramount. Rest assured, we are doing the same for the upcoming APSR Congress.

We have maintained the scientific programme and venue for the convention with all these precautions put in place. The following arrangements have been made for ALL the foreign delegates:

  1. The provision of a private security group to ensure a smooth and safe convention.
  2. Accreditation of convention transport services with the necessary security clearances for drivers and security escorts.

It is the APSR's vision to represent the aspirations and accomplishments of the health practitioners of the Asia-Pacific region just as the other regional organizations have done so. The Philippines plans to continue participating in the efforts to achieve this vision in the same way you are cooperating with us now.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Teresita S de Guia, MD, FPCCP
