4th Congress of the APSR

Greetings from China.

The fourth Congress of the Asian and Pacific Society of Respirology will be held in the Olympic Center in Beijing from October 4th, (Friday) to 8th (Tuesday), 1996. Doctors and investigators and their families are heartily welcome to this major Congress.

Beijing is an ancient capital which has adapted to modern life. This historical city offers wonderful opportunities for visitors with its world-famous Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven etc. October is the Golden Season in Beijing with blue sky and sunny weather. A range of interesting and various optional social programs will be available together with post-conference tours of Xi'an and Shanghai.

During the APSR Congress, an international panel of eminent speakers with the latest information and experience will be invited to grace the occasion. There is great need for cooperation and experience sharing among us all and this gathering will provide a much-needed platform to review latest advances in respirology, especially in the Asian Pacific region, but also throughout the world, including:

• Allergic airway diseases

• Tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacterial diseases
• Smoking-related lung diseases
• Occupational lung diseases

• Interstitial lung diseases

• Lung function tests with ethnic differences
• Experiences in imaging the lung with CT scan, MRI etc.

We believe that the Congress will promote international respirology and friendship in the Asian-Pacific region.

Welcome to Beijing for the 4th Congress of the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology October 4th-8th, 1996.

The 4th Congress of the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology is coming soon, participants and their accompanying persons are cordially welcomed to this great event. The preparations for this Congress are going on smoothly and fruitful achievement are expected. More than one thousand of participants are coming soon to join this great event. There will be eminent speakers of the world to give the latest information and experiences on topics like:

• Recent progress in the research of cell mechanics
• Acute lung injury
• Immune system in allergy
• Genetic aspects of airways diseases
• Gene therapy
• Tuberculosis and AIDS
• Long-term effects of viral infections of the airways
• Sleep apnea
• Natural history of asthma
• pharmacological prevention in asthma

More than one thousand of free papers will be presented, oral and poster discussions will take place.

The opening ceremony will be held on the 4th of October at 16:00, 1996. Art shows will be performed. Participants and their accompanying persons are invited to the opening ceremony.

October is the best month of the year, which attracted pulmonologists and chest physicians coming from different parts of the world to attend the conference in Beijing, an ancient capital adapted to modern life. There were 1,612 participants from various countries or districts; the number of the delegates and their working places are as shown in Table 1.

Eight hundred and ninety two papers including a comprehensive range of topical and critical issues in pulmonary problems and lung diseases were interchanged in the congress. Sixty four prominent speakers were invited to give reviews of the recent advances in different aspects of respirology. Twenty six companies took part in the medical exhibitions. More than 150 personnel worked for the congress, who all deserved gratitude and thanks.

The congress was a successful one, indeed. Participants from different countries expressed their views regarding the congress after the conference. A few comments are cited as follows:
