It gives me great pleasure to invite you, on behalf of the Organising Committee, to the Third Congress of the Asian-Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) to be held in Singapore from 7th to 10th October, 1993.
The theme of the Congress is "Asia-Pacific Pulmonary Medicine - Current Challenges and Future Trends". The Scientific Committee has put together a programme that is highly relevant to the participants of the Asia-Pacific region and which should appeal to the clinician and scientist alike. Included in the scientific programme are "state-of-the-art" plenary lectures on topics such as lung transplantation, smoking and lung health and acute respiratory distress syndrome as well as several major symposia featuring practical issues in various clinical areas such as pulmonary infections, asthma and lung cancer. There will also be "specific" symposia covering areas of more specialised interest to subspecialty groups, such as critical care of the lung; and endobronchial laser and stenting and an optional pre-congress workshop on "Clinical Applications of Lasers in Respiratory Medicine". Most importantly, investigators of all ages will have ample opportunities to present and discuss their work at fully-chaired oral and poster discussion sessions.
Last but not least, we hope to present a varied and exciting social programme for all participants and accompanying persons. For those who prefer to explore the island of Singapore on their own, it is safe and easy to do so.
We look forward to seeing you in October 1993.

Sample Abstract

Community acquired pneumonia (CAP) remains a significant cause for hospital admissions, both in developed and developing countries, despite the advent of potent antibiotics. Nevertheless, the pattern of CAP in Singapore is unknown.
We prospectively surveyed the pattern of CAP in patients requiring hospitalisation at National University Hospital between March and August 1991. During that time period, all patients who were admitted into NUH with CAP were enrolled into the survey. Definition of CAP includes the following: no hospital stay for at least 3 days prior to admission, pneumonic consolidation on Chest X-Ray at admission, and fever or cough plus sputum. Microbiological investigations include sputum microscopy with culture, examination of Mycobactenum tuberculosis (TB), sputum pneumococcal antigen (Wellcome latex agglutination test kit), blood cultures, serum serology for mycoplasma and legionella. 96 patients fulfilling the criteria of CAP were eligible for analysis, of which 9 patients died (mortality rate 11%). Median range of patients was 62 years (range 16 - 91), with male:female ratio of 1:1. Ethnic distribution was 76% Chinese, 18% Malay and 5% Indian. Mycobactenum tuberculosis (TB) remains the commonest identifiable pyogenic organism, of which only 25% was identified by sputum culture. Gram-negative organisms are significant pathogens in 19% of patients. No micro-organism was identified in more than half the patients.
As this survey is only limited to patients admitted into a single hospital within a relatively short time period, regional and seasonal differences in causative micro-organisms may not be detected. Nevertheless, the observed pattern would be a useful guide to the management of patients hospitalised with community acquired pneumonia at first contact in a Singapore hospital.
