Dear Colleagues:

The First Congress of the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) will be held in October 1988 for the advancement of respirology and to promote understanding and friendship among specialists in the region. The topics of the congress will include the structure and function of the respiratory system, respiratory infections, bronchial asthma, pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic obstructive lung diseases, interstitial lung diseases, cardiopulmonary abnormalities, occupational lung diseases and lung cancer. It will also cover fields related to pathophysiology, and clinical medicine in addition to various diagnostic and therapeutic aspects. The Organizing Committee earnestly hopes that many involved in activities related to these fields will accept this invitation to participate in the Congress.

At present there is no world-wide organization devoted only to the subject of respirology, but, looking at various geographical regions, the American Thoracic Society and Societas Europaea Pneumologica are both very active in North America and Europe, respectively. Many specialists in our region have talked about the formation of a similar organization for the Asian and Pacific area, and I feel that it is particularly auspicious that the APSR has indeed been formed. We hope that our Organizing Committee will continue to work in close cooperation with already existing societies in other regions in the world and make a significant contribution to progress in the field of respirology.

It is also my hope that those from abroad who participate in the scientific meeting will be able to obtain some familiarity with cultural and historical aspects of Japan. This would render the meaning of attendance at the Congress of even greater significance and also make it more enjoyable.

I would like to conclude by emphasizing how much we feel the need for participation in the Congress in Tokyo by many colleagues in this field throughout the Asian and Pacific region in order to solidly lay the founding stone of our society.

An official invitation letter will be sent by the Organizing Committee on request. However, such solicited invitations will not offer payment of any expenses, such as registration, travel or hotel accommodations for the Congress.

Application for Presentations

Those who wish to contribute a paper to the Scientific Program are requested to fill out Forms A-1 and A-2 as shown in the sample provided, and send them to the Secretariat together with the Registration Form (Form B) by February 15, 1988. The Program Committee will make the final decisions concerning the acceptance of abstracts, session placement and type of presentation. Notification of acceptance of papers and of any subsidy awards will be sent out by April 30, 1988. Further details will be sent together with the notification of acceptance.

Speakers in the Symposia

Speakers in the symposia 1), 2) and 4) will be invited to give papers by the Program Committee. Presentation at symposia 3) and 5) will be selected from among those who indicate their wish to participate in a letter to the Chairman of the Program Committee prior to December 31, l987. The application letter should be accompanied with Form A-1, A-2 and Form B. The applicant will be notified by February 1988 if the presentation has been selected for inclusion in the symposium.

Enclose one original and 5 clear copies of the abstract form.
Only abstracts written in English will be considered.
Please send the enclosed forms to the Congress Secretariat before February 15, 1988.

VISUAL AIDS

For oral presentations, one 35mm slide projector per room will be available. No overhead projector, movie or video projection will be available.

SUBSIDIES

A fund will be prepared to significantly subsidize the accommodation costs of active participants from the Asian and Pacific region who are making presentations at the Congress. This effort is being made in order to ensure that the entire area will be represented as widely as possible and with sufficient depth. Speakers from the Asian Pacific region can apply on the Abstract Form (Form A-1) for awards to defray expenses if their abstracts are accepted. There will be 100 awards available of up to US$400 per speaker.

BOOK OF ABSTRACTS

A book of abstracts of all presentations will be printed and distributed to all Congress participants when they register at the Congress site.

PROCEEDINGS

Preparations are being made to publish the Proceedings after the Congress. Authors will be asked to provide camera-ready manuscripts when they register at the Congress site. Manuscripts submitted later cannot be guaranteed inclusion in the Proceedings. Further details will be provided to authors when they are notified concerning acceptance of their paper.

Tandem symposia are planned in connection with the APSR Congress. Those attending the APSR Congress are entitled to participate for no extra cost but must contact the respective offices themselves in advance.

HEALTH PROGRAMS

Special Programs for allied health professionals will be held for one day as part of the Congress. Quality of life in patients with respiratory failure, communication with intubated patients and respiratory care in allied health will be the main subjects.

Participation is open to all persons interested in Respirology. The full registration fee for active participants includes entry to all scientific programs and to some of the social events. Accompanying persons are entitled to participate in some of the social events but not in the scientific programs unless they pay the full registration fee.

*For the 1st Congress, Society members are considered to be those who will submit a membership application form for the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology and are willing to pay the annual dues. The details concerning membership application will be finalized by the Membership Committee to be held before the Congress in Tokyo. Those interested in joining the APSR should obtain a membership form from the registration desk at the Congress. The filled-in form should be submitted to the registration desk.

Those who wish to attend the Congress should fill out the Registration Form (Form B) and return it to the Secretariat (See page 5).

REMITANCE PROCEDURE

Registrants should remit their registration fees in US dollars by bank draft (check) made payable to the 1st Congress of the APSR.

No personal check will be accepted.

Registration will also be possible after September 15, 1988, beginning on October 21, at the registration desk inside the Congress hall. Since this desk will no doubt be crowded, please make every effort to register before the pre-registration deadline.

N.B. The deadline for abstracts is February 15, 1988.

CONFIRMATION AND RECEIPT

Upon receiving your registration form and your remittance, the Secretariat will send you a receipt with your registration number. Please do not forget to bring this receipt with you when you register.

CANCELLATION OF REGISTRATION

A refund of 75% of the total registration fee paid will be made after the Congress if the cancellation is received by the Secretariat on or before September 15, 1988. No refunds will be made for cancellations received on or later than September 16, 1988.

REGISTRATION

Registration will be in the Nippon Toshi Center from Friday, October 21, 13:00. Participants are requested to register and pick up Congress Kit at this time.

SOCIAL EVENTS

WELCOME RECEPTION

This buffet-style reception will give us an opportunity to extend a warm welcome to our friends from around the world, and for all participants to join in celebrating the opening of the Congress. All participants and accompanying persons are invited to attend. There will be no charge.

ACCOMPANYING PERSONS' PROGRAM

A variety of programs will be arranged for registered accompanying persons to introduce them to a number of Japanese traditional arts.

SPECIAL CONGRESS TOUR

A visit to the Imperial Palace is planned during the Congress. Advanced application is essential and should be made on Registration Form B. Applications during the Congress will NOT be accepted by the Imperial Household Agency. There will be no charge for the tour. Date and time of the tour will be announced in the Preliminary Program.

The weather in Tokyo during the Congress period should be rather mild and dry. The mean temperature in October is 17.3°C (63.1°F), with the maximum and minimum temperatures being 21.2°C (70.1°F) and 13.9°C (57.O°F) respectively. Congress participants are recommended to bring a light sweater with them. Formal wear will not be required for any of the Congress functions.

FOREIGN CURRENCY EXCHANGE

Major banks that handle foreign currencies are located in the downtown area. Banks are open from 9:00 to 15:00 on weekdays, and from 9:00 to noon on Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays, National Holidays, and on the second and third Saturdays of every month. Major foreign currencies can also be exchanged at major hotels. However, attendees are advised to bring or exchange around ¥20,000 in cash at the airport to cover the cost of transportation to downtown Tokyo.

TRAVELER'S CHECKS AND CREDIT CARDS

Traveler's checks are accepted only by leading banks and hotels in major cities, and you should be aware that the use of traveler's checks in Japan is not as popular as in some other countries. International credit cards such as American Express, Visa. Diners Club, and Master Card are also acceptable at such major establishments.

TRAVEL ASSISTANCE

Japan Travel-Phone is a toll-free telephone service, in operation everyday including Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00. An English-speaking travel expert is ready to help you unravel language problems, and to offer travel information. The number in Tokyo is (03) 502-1461, and in Kyoto, (075) 371-5649. While you are outside central Tokyo or Kyoto, dial 106 and tell the operator, in English "Collect call, TIC, please." You will be connected immediately with TIC (the Travel Information Center). For such calls, you can use yellow or green public phones, or a private phone. Collect calls cannot be made from a red public phones.

PASSPORTS AND VISAS

Every foreign visitor entering Japan must be in possession of a valid passport. Nationals of countries requiring visas should apply to the Japanese Consular offices or diplomatic missions in their countries as soon as possible. For details, participants are advised to consult a travel agent or nearest Japanese diplomatic mission in their country.

ARRIVAL AND ACCESS TO DOWNTOWN TOKYO

Most international flights arrive at the New Tokyo International Airport (Narita) which is located about 60 km from downtown Tokyo. The most convenient means of transportation into Tokyo is the Airport Limousine Bus. For further information, participants are requested to contact the ticket counter of the Airport Limousine Bus upon arrival.
